Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada The Sierra Nevada mountain range is the highest on the North American continent. As fascinating as the mountains are on the western side, the eastern slopes of the mountains are nothing short of breathtaking. And the road to soak in this beauty is Highway 395, which runs almost parallel to the Calfornia-Nevada border. The Tahoe basin has something for everyone, with numerous trails and drives for the photographer and Nature lover and with water activities and skiing for those who are averse to photography or hiking.

You don't have to go far to capture the beauty of Lake Tahoe. The North rim is more serene than the gambling-enabled South rim, but being there when the light is perfect is all the luck that you need. Various jettys and boardwalks present perfect foreground interest for the postcard shot. Although, just like anything within 3-4 hours of the San Francisco Bay Area, and especially because of the easy availability of skiing and water sports, the Lake Tahoe region is always bursting at its seams from noisy tourists.

Picking the right time of the year, and going (driving) the extra mile or ten is critical to getting a good landscape image in this area. A good driving tour involves taking CA-50 east towards Carson City, going south on 395 and moving into the Sierras via 88 and 89. Then, choose your mood (or time) and drive deeper into the Kirkwood Resort region (Caples Lake, Silver Lake), or drive back north into South Lake Tahoe.
